From June 24–26, 2026, IRISCC Work Package 1 (WP1) hosted an onsite training on “Stakeholder Engagement in Socioecological Risk Analysis” at BOKU University in Vienna, Austria. Led by trainers Veronika Gaube (BOKU), Thomas Thaler (BOKU), and Nikolaos Nikolaidis (Technical University of Crete), the course provided researchers with practical tools to analyze socio-ecological risks and collaborate effectively with local stakeholders.

What Was Covered
To bridge theory and real-world application, the training covered five core areas:
- Social Ecology & Systems Thinking: Explored society-nature interactions, resilience, and pathways to sustainable transitions.
- Stakeholder Mapping: Applied tools like the Power-Interest Grid and Power-Predictability Matrix to classify actors and manage project risks.
- Participatory Modeling: Showed how agent-based models (ABM) structure stakeholder discussions and simulate policy impacts.
- WEFE Nexus Applications: Reviewed regional case studies from the Jordan Valley and Crete, balancing trade-offs across Water, Energy, Food, and Ecosystems.
- Action Planning: Concluded with role-playing exercises and draft engagement plans applied directly to participants' research projects.
